Ivan Basso like you’ve never seen him before: out of the saddle.
The Italian is a bit of diesel who climbs very well but without intense bursts of power, preferring instead to asphyxiate his rivals with a high tempo. This might be the first photo I can remember where he’s standing on the pedals.
He rode strongly to eliminate several rivals and whilst it’s too early to be sure, he might well have bought himself a podium spot with today’s riding.
